Are the gliders difficult to build?
We worked for months with engineers to develop patented build techniques that make the STEM Hawk almost as easy to build as folding a paper airplane. With the help of a hot glue gun and our simple, illustrated instructions, students young and mature will have a fun experience building their gliders, even if they've never built anything similar before.
Are the gliders durable?
Yes! While no glider is invincible, the STEM Hawk is made of durable EPP foam. That's the same stuff used in car bumpers and some bicycle helmets. It's made to take a beating. If your plane does break, it can normally be glued back together quickly without even leaving the field.
How much time does the course take?
The STEM Hawk Glider is designed to integrate seamlessly into your existing curriculum. The comprehensive lesson plan included with the kits recommends three 2-hour sessions. This structure and lesson plan is offered simply as a suggestion to get you on the right track. The timeframe of the workshop can be condensed into a single day or expanded over weeks to fit within your usual class hours. Feel free to ask us for help integrating our workshop into your class schedule.
Is safety a concern with the kits?
Safety is our top priority. The gliders themselves are quite safe for students of all ages. They are built with minimal tools or hot glue to minimize the risk of danger. That being said, it's always important to supervise activities, especially during the operation of hot glue guns. Use your own disgretion to determine if your students can safely handle a hot glue gun.
What equipment will I, as a teacher, need for the workshop?
We've designed this workshop to minimize the materials and equipment required to host this workshop. You'll need hot glue guns and hot glue sticks for each of your students. You'll also want adequate space for building each plane (a 2-3 foot wide desk) and for flying your planes (a large room or outdoor field, at least 50 feet long). If you choose to use our included PowerPoint slides, we recommend presenting them with a projector on the board.
Can we upgrade to RC planes?
Yes! The STEM Hawk is designed to be an expandable platform for aspiring engineers. We have RC conversion kit available to turn your throw gliders into electric remote-control planes. This will open the door to many more workshops, especially for High Schools, Universities, and Adults. Contact Us at the bottom of this webpage to learn more and get yours!
Do you offer discounts?
Yes, we're able to offer better pricing for larger orders. The more kits you include in your order, the lower your price per kit will be. A great way to lower the cost per student is to allow students to share their planes (up to 3 students per plane). Additionally, we normally have an active promotion.
